Antonio Jesús Luque Rojas is a federated climber and speleologist since 1992 within the Espeleo Club Algeciras speleology group. It would be in this sporting association where he would meet Lothar Bergmann, with whom he would share friendship and the interest in rock art, which would lead to collaborate with him in some of his research projects, such as the elaboration of the topography of the Moro cave. This collaboration will be carried out at the direct request of Lothar Bergmann after the discoveries of the Paleolithic engravings located in the cited cave.
The different publications performed by Lothar Bergmann in which these speleological topology works would be included, allowed the professor of Prehistory of the UCA, José Ramón Muñoz, to know his work, and to request in 2002 his collaboration as speleologist in the realization of the new topographies of the archaeological sites of Abrigo and the cave of Benzú de Ceuta.
The movie can be divided into two parts: the documentary itself, and a wide range of extras among which we can highlight a topography of the Moro cave, and seven prints with images from the cave carried out by Lothar Bergmann. As well as a biography of himself.
The interview with Lothar Bergmann, German, speleologist and researcher who dedicated much of his life to the discovery, cataloging and protection of rock art in the south of the province of Cádiz, took place in July 2001. At that time, a filming team moves to the archaeological site of the Algabes, located in Tarifa, to witness a first informative meeting with Lothar Bergmann, who had co-founded the Gaditan Association for the Study and Defense of the Archaeological Heritage (AGEDPA), responsible for the defense and protection of the Southern Art, looking also for this art to become part of the Unesco World Heritage list. The reason for this interview that sees light in this report, would be made with the intention of creating a report centered on rock art. This documentary would not finally be accomplished, however, the interview performed to Lothar Bergmann, will serve in this new documentary as the guiding thread on which the recording will be built.
Along with the interventions of Lothar Bergmann, recorded by Antonio Jesús Luque Rojas on site, in which all the discoveries made by the protagonist will be mentioned, as well as his struggle to get the support of the governmental institutions for the protection and safeguard of the area, and his spreading work, the most detailed professional analysis will be mixed, performed by the professor of Prehistory of the University of Cádiz, José Ramón Muñoz, that will be enhancing the important work achieved by Lothar Bergmann throughout his professional life as speleologist in the south of the province of Cádiz. Culminating this information with a series of different more personal and intimate stories of his personal life shown by his widow.
Together with these first-hand impressions about the work of Lothar Bergmann, the documentary will make a tour of different sites, caves and shelters from the province of Cádiz, such as the caves of Fontanilla, the Palmones site, the Estrella shelter, Palomas cave, Laja Alta cave, or Arroyo cave. The comparative analysis will as well take us through other places within the southern geography, such as the Gorhan's Cave in Gibraltar, the Benzó cave in Ceuta, or the Ardales cave in Málaga; all of them are considered reference items for the analysis of the rock art so-called as Southern Art.
The documentary will put the magnifying glass on the discovery and analysis of the Moro cave, spearhead of Lothar Bergmann’s work, finding that would reinforce the previously formulated hypothesis, but not demonstrated, that the south of the province of Cádiz was part of the Mediterranean route of the Paleolithic art, and that manifested similarly to those found in the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, including the Cantabrian manifestations. The discovery of this cave thanks to the tireless work of Lothar Bergmann, will mark a milestone on the Southern Art, denomination created by himself to designate all the manifestations of Paleolithic art appeared in the south of the province of Cádiz, around to the area of
the Tarifan Algarbes.
In conclusion, an interesting work of approaching the general public, and researchers in particular, to the professional and personal work of Lothar Bergmann, who would mark a milestone in the area rock art research, leaving for further study a large bibliographical collection after documenting dozens of new cavities and shelters in the province of Cádiz. Likewise, it shows his important conservation and divulgation task regarding the sites located both in Cádiz and in the rest of the world, thanks to the creation of a website called Southern Art, where he would digitally dump all his discoveries in images and topographies

Careful and laborious publication presented, on the occasion of the 35
th
anniversary of the Publications Service of the University of Cádiz, by the Editorial UCA imprint. Doctors Rosario Gestido, Ana Remón and José Joaquín Rodríguez have built this book of books -as self-described in its introduction-, in which we can enjoy a chosen selection of the bibliographic funds of our university.
Even though the University of Cádiz was founded in 1979, centuries ago, many works had begun to be grouped in different study centers of the gaditan capital: the Royal Surgery College, the Normal Teachers' Schools, the Elemental School of Commerce, the School of Pilots and the School of Industrial and Nautical Experts. Therefore, up to now, the bibliographic collection of the UCA brings all those funds together reaching to more than ten thousand volumes among which thirty works have been chosen that chronologically stroll from the late XVII
th
to the mid XX
th
centuries.
But these publications do not only vary in the different periods in which they were published, but also, as expected, in their thematic: botany, zoology, surgery, handicrafts, history, physics, literature, religion or art. Each chapter corresponds with one of the chosen bibliographical works, reproducing, in the first place, the cover. Right after, the transcription of the title, the description of the volume, as well as a brief explanatory text about the author and the work, to finally conclude with the origin within the old funds of the Historical Library of the UCA.
Also must be highlighted the great variety of authors, as although one can think that the collection could be directed to local and regional themes and authors, the reality of itself is very different. The different centers that have increased the funds, as well as the academic and/or scientific personalities that have been nourishing them, have gathered through the decades the most varied collection of authors, where we should highlight to the foreigners represented, for instance, with the novelists Alejandro Dumas or Hans Cristian Andersen; to the nationals like the military Francisco Antonio de Ettenhard or the actor Juan Landa, but also the gaditans Emilio Castelar or Cayetano of the Toro.
In conclusion, a good selection that brings to the general public the magnificent humanistic treasure contained in the Historical Library of the UCA and that can also be purchased together with the volume, if preferred by the applicant, a wonderful collection of postcards in which part of the prints that form the interior of these precious works are reproduced. Therefore, we are in a position to affirm that the work has an unusual commercial interest without leaving aside its scientific and dissemination character since for those people who do not know these funds is an excellent showcase through which to get an idea of
what they cover. Funds that according to the authors continue to grow thanks to donations from individuals who, with sound judgment, decide that their collections have to rest in this Historical Library, and that is also open for consultation even on the website of the aforementioned center (
http://archivo.uca.es/
) as many of them are being digitized.

**********
With the new monograph of the Editorial UCA imprint
the author Jesús Manuel González Beltrán gives the floor to a large part of the Castilian population that has never had a voice in history. We talk about a broad social sector of the Old Regime: the salaried field workers; with a marked frame-time line such as Baja Andalucia, and more specifically the localities of
El Puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Rota, Chiclana de la Frontera, Zahara de la Sierra, Medina Sidonia and Jerez de la Frontera, during the second half of the XVIIIth century.
González Beltrán arrives to the study of the already stated social group after years of research dedicated to the local administration in Modern times and he does it in a natural way, as the one that has gone through a path of historical studies around the illusions, strategies or processes of the different social classes. However, since the beginning it is noticeable within the work the difficulty when laying the foundation of the study, as one might expect, due to the lack of direct documentary sources. The Andalusian peasantry of the XVIII
th
century have left no evident trace by themselves, so their study depends on indirect sources such as Chapter Minutes of municipal archives, files of the National Historical Archive or other public or private archives containing material of interest. Therefore we will always be shown the rural salaried employee from the others’ point of view.
Nevertheless we are facing a rigorous work that sheds enough light on some fundamental years regarding the evolution of the Andalusian peasantry, since between 1750 and 1800 the bases of the later contemporary Andalusian collective will be laid. Salaried workers that González Beltrán describes by their terrible labor situation, that sometimes even went to work in exchange of obtaining only the daily food. As the author reminds us, the days in the field from "sun to sun" once the XVIII
th
century arrived, were still ruled by four regulations implemented four centuries ago. Most of the occasions through purely verbal agreements, introducing some novelties only at the end of the century that compete us. And all of this aggravated by external causes such as the bad weather that affected several decades of the second half of the XVIII
th
century, which plunged the countryside of Jerez in at least fifteen years of seasonal unemployment.
A countryside where the latifundium was established centuries ago and that its large areas of land allowed to accommodate day laborers from mountain localities of Cádiz, regions that in spite of being under the same regime, were not able to give labor to so much population that finally was absorbed by Jerez.
In the chapters of the book we are not only referred to the work situation, as we have already seen, but the author opens the season to the knowledge of some of the conflicts that are going to be lived as the second half of the XVIII
th
century advances in the Baja Andalusia. A conflict that will double the number of labor claims in their different forms of development. Sessions of chapter minutes or written memos of clergymen have given good account of it. Like the different forms of complaint of the employees: delaying the arrival at the place of work, slowing the development of it, etc.
In conclusion, a study necessary to understand a forgotten sector of society in Modern times -opposite to the high classes, middle ones and even other "minorities" as Moorish or slaves that have been investigated-, and that makes us realize how the XVIII
th
century Andalusian peasantry was not a homogeneous whole, but that there were several levels of salaried employees
depending on their circumstances; that usually suffered from poor living conditions; and that was not a submissive group as such. The search for the social reality of the Andalusian countryside continues and we hope that
Entre surcos y penurias…
is only a milestone on the path, since as well indicates González Beltrán there is still plenty of information to locate within private archives but also in public archives as the Chancery of Granada or the Royal Audience of Seville.

************
Hipólito Sancho Mayi Díez de Aux-Sopranis, the historian from El Puerto de Santa María (1893-1964), and an unpublished manuscript of himself, regarding the Consolation Virgin of Jerez, constitute the last published work within the collection of
(Sources for the History of Cadiz and its province) of the Editorial UCA imprint.
Hipólito Sancho de Sopranis, name with which the author is mainly known, studied Theology before graduating in Law, Philosophy and History. It would be to this last discipline the one to which he would dedicate most of his works, constituting, therefore, his true vocation. From a very early age, Hipólito Sancho will understand research as a method to get to the truth, trying throughout his whole life, to apply his knowledge rigorously and with independence. Being a man of deep religiosity, this does not impede him to understand that the truth must prevail in every investigation, something that we will see with the manuscript at hand. The historian, who covers in his long research career a multitude of themes and eras, focuses most of his work on the knowledge of the cities of Jerez de la Frontera and El Puerto de Santa María through an exhaustive knowledge of their files.
Hipólito Sancho will have an intense academic activity, being member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences and Arts of Cadiz, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Seville and the Center of Studies from Jerez, in which he actively collaborates for its foundation. At the same time, he would combine his work as teacher in various center of his hometown, working in the archives and library of El Puerto de Santa María, as well as with the general secretariat of the Mayor's Office in 1939. Though, paradoxically, he would never hold a stable employment.
The manuscript regarding the publication, is a text that appears in the Convent of Santo Domingo de Jerez, with no authorship or title, of unknown existence for the Dominicans themselves before the moment of its appearance, as a result of them taking charge of the archive. With a prologue by Manuel Ravina Martín, this edition is made by the Doctor in History Antonio Aguayo Cobo and Jesús Antonio Serrano Plazuelo, Bachelor in Humanities, both responsible for the introductory study to the found text.
The performed research on the manuscript, has taken into account different elements, both stylistic and material, making clear, in the first place, the hand of Hipólito Sancho.
Historians agree on the idea that the text is a possible draft, prior to 1959, destined to the Dominicans for a later publication that was left unseen for unknown reasons. The work is composed of ten chapters without cover, tittle page, bibliography, or appendices, a total of 119 typed quartos, with barely written annotations. This text tells us from the origins of the cult up to the devotion and peculiarities of itself, going through an exhaustive iconographic analysis, as well as the different historical evolutions that the image has endured.
Analyzing the work, the investigators observe how Hipólito Sancho's eagerness is, above all, to bring truthfulness to the study of the image, as for instance with regards to the chronology of its miraculous discovery by the Adorno family in the Gulf of Roses, in 1285, discarded date due to diverse elements of the text. So, in the aforementioned legend, historical personages born in later centuries appear, which induces to think the invention of the legend from this family, to the self-aggrandizement of the surname.
Hipólito Sancho shows an effort for preciseness, even in what regards to some miracles attributed to the Consolation Virgin, in spite of his faith to her, based mainly on documentary evidences, as well as in all the data regarding the cult in Jerez de la Frontera throughout centuries.
This monograph concerns a work of exceptional interest to recover the importance of Hipólito Sancho as historian. Aguayo Cobo and Serrano Plazuelo, elaborate a thorough study of the unpublished text that allows us to identify a meticulous investigator, who wants to know the reality of the facts beyond the tradition or his own religiosity. An indispensable work both for his extensive contribution to the history of the image, and to fairly value the fundamental figure of Hipólito Sancho.

The new work of the Editorial UCA imprint that we present in our blog,
El arte de pescar palabras
(The Art of Fishing Words), is much more than a glossary of marine terms.
In 2012, a young researcher, presently Dr. Maria de las Mercedes Soto Melgar, traveled the coast of Cádiz from east to west to deeply know and study the words employed in the speech of the fishing activity. From this experience emerges the book that concerns us, a linguistic-ethnographic study that not only compiles a glossary of more than 400 words, but also an analysis of the relationship between language and the fishermen's way of life, their habits, and of their way of communicating. This study delves into the identity of a collective through an orality that constitutes it as a group and that defines it as the owner of a unique language.
The author, Doctor of Hispanic Philology from the University of Granada, has gone through, from La Línea de la Concepción up to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, twelve fishing villages of the province of Cádiz, to interview in first person the protagonists of this collective. For this purpose, the researcher has conducted semi-structured interviews to the informants, that is, without a questionnaire, in order to try to seek the greatest spontaneity of themselves.
The first chapter of the book, is a study on the fishing history in Cadiz, from its origins, with the first prehistoric settlements, to the present day. Right after, the different fishing methods employed on the coast of Cadiz are described, itemized within the next chapters in Fishnet Arts, Fishing Hook Tackles, Trap Arts and Shellfishing Art. Thus, in Fishnet Arts, the terms employed in fishnet ensemble, enclosing and
jareta
, beach and pair-trawling are analyzed. In the chapter dedicated to the use of Fishing Hook Tackles, the doctor differentiates us the different terminologies concerning the parts of a hook, as well as the voices that are used to call the fishing line, the flotation elements, the ballast or the bait, distinguishing also the multiple hook types. In the Trap Arts, the study distinguishes four trapping varieties,
pots
,
pitchers
,
almadrabas
, and
fishing pens
. From all of them typologies, as well as parts and peculiarities, are detailed, being especially remarkable the contribution of the work to the knowledge of the Gaditan almadraba.
The last chapter of the book is dedicated to the art of shellfishing, observing the different forms of mollusk extraction from the seabed. The trails, performed manually or towed, hydraulic dredges, as well as other specific techniques such as the Portuguese shellfishing, consisting of taking advantage of the low tide to catch
coquinas
(type of clamp) are studied.
In the conclusions of the work, an extensive assessment of the linguistic and ethnographic singularities of the marine language of the province of Cádiz is made. A language that, according to the author, has been able to combine the inherited wealth of tradition with the passing of time, adapting, growing and remaining in constant change thanks to the new techniques and needs of the profession.
To finish the review of this essential work of the Editorial UCA imprint, we must emphasize in the broad glossary closing it. Thus, the studied voices represent an effective analysis resource, useful and functional, providing an indispensable tool to learn more about the ancient art of fishing in our province.

************
The book that we present on this occasion in our blog, constitutes the second edition of a manual published in 2008. This reedition, is a more than useful tool, necessary and essential, focused especially for marine, nautical and environmental science students, as it establishes a series of actions when dealing with hydrocarbon spills (carbon and hydrogen compound, mixed with other chemical elements), into the sea.
To avoid a disaster of such importance, it is essential to mark some prevention lines, to assess the damage, and to response, as quickly as possible. That is why, this manual supposes a document, not existent up to the moment of its creation, which was imperatively necessary in order to compile all the existing bibliography and experiences that had been dispersed. The work is developed in a didactic way, so its use is appropriate for professionals who face this problem in an everyday basis, as well as for students who are beginning their learning and experience in this field.
José María Silos Rodríguez is the author of this work. Captain of the Merchant Navy by the Nautical School of Barcelona,
member of the Spanish Navy and lecturer at the University of Cadiz, Doctor of Civil Navy since 2011 and responsible for Marine Engineering, Navy and Radioelectronics studies at the University of Costa Rica.
The traffic of crude oil and its byproducts, constitutes one of the largest maritime cargoes in the world, due to the high value of this fuel for the global economy. The production zones are going to be very specific, thus the shipping routes are located from the Persian Gulf, North Africa, West Africa and the Caribbean, to Europe, Japan, North America and China. This traffic, therefore, becomes a potential risk that will be aggravated by different issues outlined in the manual. Thus, the author talks about the condition of the ships, which, although it has improved over the last years, still remain many cases in which international regulations for transport safety are not yet fulfilled. In addition, it is necessary to remark the problem when establishing liability in case of an accident, since the global fleet is formed by small companies with a large number of intermediaries, as for instance happened, and it is shown in the work, in the case of the Prestige ship disaster. Statistically speaking, the greatest number of spills occur when the fuel is manipulated, during the loading and unloading process, followed by those arisen in collisions or agroundings.
When a hydrocarbon spillage is poured into the sea, it is not only essential to know its properties, but also their behavior. Also, in order to act, how and in which way it will spread and the movement the crude will follow. Mathematical and computerized methods, as we see in the manual, will help professionals to act accordingly. In the book, all means for the containment of hydrocarbons once the spill has occurred are described, by different types of barriers that restrain their expansion. Once contained, the mechanisms employed for the recovery of the spilled oil are explained, reviewing the available resources and products. The work not only deals with accidents in the marine environment, but also explains how to act when spills penetrate land and rivers. The disastrous impact of a spill for the terrestrial space when it penetrates the coast, is an issue that must be foreseen by carrying out a contingency plan before and after the accident, so that rehabilitation and consequences are the least possible.
Prevention and rapid action are the most effective ins
truments to stop the spill, and this manual details the monitoring and observation ways that exist, as well as contingency plans and international regulations for such prevention. In addition to the fifteen chapters constituting this comprehensive study, five annexes, a series of charts and maps regarding ships, spills and their cleaning are included.
Therefore, it is mandatory its reading, study and use for such tricky business and with such complex solution.
