C.). </div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: center;"> ************** </div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: justify;"> The new <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" style="mso-comment-date: 20170529T1647; mso-comment-reference: X_1;">book </a> presented by the Editorial UCA imprint, is a text dedicated to the work of the Greek astronomer Aristarchus of Samos (310-230 B.C.). This book acquires a special interest since it is the first translation into Spanish made of the original text. Doctor Mª Rosa Massa Esteve, mathematics lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, is responsible for the introduction and translation of Aristarchus's text, using for that purpose the Latin text of Frederick Commandino of 1572 and the Greek-English translation of Thomas Heath, from 1913.</div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: justify;"> The only work of Aristarchus that has reached us is Sobre los tamaños y distancias del Sol y la Luna (On the sizes and distances of the Sun and Moon), text within a collection entitled as Pequeña Astronomía (Lesser Astronomical Works), according to Pappus of Alexandria (290-350 B.C.). In this new edition, in order to translate his comments, the French translation of Paul Ver Eecke, of 1982, has been used.</div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: justify;"> Disciple of Strato of Lampsacus, Aristarchus, born in the Greek island of Samos, is best known for his Heliocentric theory to explain the running of the cosmos. Very little is known regarding his private life, although almost all the information that has come from it is due to citations of later texts, as well as for the only work that has remained. In this way, Ptolemy in the Almagest (2nd century A.D.) cites him for his work in the observation of equinoxes and solstices, attributing these phenomena to the movement exerted by the earth around the sun. Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) later, will also make reference to Aristarchus as well as to the work.</div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: justify;"> Archimedes of Syracuse, contemporary of Aristarchus, on the other hand, in the work the Arenary dated in 216 B.C., tells how Aristarchus poses hypotheses about the magnitude of the universe. In these, the sun and the stars would be immobile, being the earth the one moving around them. The historian Plutarch also cites the astronomer and mathematician in his book Obras Morales (Moralia) and narrates how Cleanthes denounced him as impious, due to the rejection of the geocentric theory of the universe.</div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: justify;"> However, in spite of all these references, Massa Esteve points out that Aristarchus in the book Sobre los tamaños y distancias del Sol y la Luna (On the sizes and distances of the Sun and Moon) will not present the Heliocentric hypothesis of the universe. Although the author emphasizes as plausible that this idea would arise to the Greek when verifying that the Sun is much bigger than the Earth and the Moon, and that it is located at a greater distance from the Earth than from the Moon.</div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: justify;"> Eighteen are the propositions that the astronomer formulates in mathematical exercises in order to calculate the sizes and distances of the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" style="mso-comment-date: 20170529T1740; mso-comment-reference: X_3;">celestial bodies</a> . A work of impeccable preciseness, according to the author, which demonstrates reliably the quality of the studies performed by the Greek.</div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: justify;"> This publication, presented by the Editorial UCA imprint, is an essential document not only for the astronomer, mathematician, historian, specialist or researcher in the field, but also a very accessible text for anyone interested in knowing the work of the Greek, now in an unpublished translation into Spanish.</div> <div align="justify" style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: center;"> </div> <div style="mso-element: comment-list;"> <div style="mso-element: comment;"> <div id="_com_3" language="JavaScript" style="margin: 0px;"> </div> </div> </div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px 0px 11px; text-align: center;"> </div>
