New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">* * *</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Ana Remón Rodríguez is doctor in History of Science from the University of Cádiz and specialist in Archives, Libraries and Museums. Also, she will emphasize in the medical-surgical training that Spain had from the Late Middle Ages to the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth II. Showing the evolution from a pluralistic teaching up to the moment when there was a collapse of the cultivation of science with the return of XIX^th century absolutism, passing through periods of tradition and modernity where the University had much to say, both for better or worse.</span></div> <span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span> </span><br /> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The third chapter makes direct reference to the Royal College of Surgery, and tells how it evolved to become the Faculty of Medical Sciences. We will know from its background up to its decline. Also how the creation of the Royal Hospital was, how Pedro Vigili will transformed it into a military character center that will host the Royal College of Surgery of the Navy, and how changed from having a three year formation to six, where the study method mixed both theoretical and practical knowledge. Likewise, the author will narrate how the facilities were, their rules, and the necessary precepts to achieve the title of Latin surgeon of the Royal institution, which took into account both knowledge and behavior.<o:p></o:p></span></div> <span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The fourth chapter refers to how the Spanish Libraries in the transition from the Age of Enlightenment to Romanticism were, to move on then, in the fifth one, to focus on the functioning and services offered by the Library of the Royal College of Surgery. She will pass, in this way, to narrate how the readings and the libraries were, and in general their role within the country, to do then the same exercise, but in a particular way, with Cádiz, entering now, to evaluate in detail the legal framework that encompassed it, carefully analyzing each Statute and General Ordinance that refers to the Library of the Royal College of Surgery of Cádiz. Finishing the chapter with the economic analysis of the institution, which refers above all to the method of acquisition and incorporation of the different works that formed its fund.<o:p></o:p></span></div> <span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span> </span><br /> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">After making a citation, and a brief review of all the librarians who passed through the School, the work changes field, and accomplishes throughout the sixth chapter the critical study of the Library's funds. Begins with an analysis by author, to later move to individualize by date, place and language of publication and edition. It is striking within this point bibliographical classification system of Charles Brunet, which was the system chosen by the School and that was developed at the beginning of the XIX^th century. In it, you can see topics such as Literature and Medical Philosophy, Anatomy, Hygiene, Physiology, Surgery, Pharmacy, Mathematics, Pathology or Therapeutics, among others.</span></div> <span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span> </span><br /> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">To conclude, the author refers to the pillage that Bartolomé José Gallardo made to the fund of the Royal College of Surgery of Cádiz to perform the creation of the Library of the Cortes. We will see at this point, how with the transfer of the funds from the Royal College to the new Library of the Cortes, ordered by its director Gallardo, would begin what would be the long plundering and loss of such important documentary and bibliographic funds, even if it was not its only cause. Gallardo will move that library as the deputies to Cortes had difficulties documenting their interventions, but he also does it with the intention of creating a library of public instruction. Modification that would also affect the Library of Guardiamarinas, and the Maritime Library of Cádiz.<o:p></o:p></span></div> <span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"></span></span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In short, the work achieves an interesting labour of approaching to the public not only of the bibliographic fund of the Library of the Royal College of Surgery of Cádiz and its use, but also lends its research to the formation of a perfect housing to understand the historical and social contexts which led the city to get to have one of the most important libraries of the time, within one of the flagship institutions of the contemporary history of Spain in general and of Cádiz in particular.<o:p></o:p></span></div> <br />

US" style="background: white; font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;">Careful and laborious publication presented, on the occasion of the 35</span>^{<span style="color: black;">th</span>}<span style="color: black;"> anniversary of the Publications Service of the University of Cádiz, by the Editorial UCA imprint. Doctors Rosario Gestido, Ana Remón and José Joaquín Rodríguez have built this book of books -as self-described in its introduction-, in which we can enjoy a chosen selection of the bibliographic funds of our university.</span></span><br /> <span lang="EN-US" style="background: white; font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span></div> <div align="left" style="text-align: center;"> <span style="color: black;"></span></div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;">Even though the University of Cádiz was founded in 1979, centuries ago, many works had begun to be grouped in different study centers of the gaditan capital: the Royal Surgery College, the Normal Teachers' Schools, the Elemental School of Commerce, the School of Pilots and the School of Industrial and Nautical Experts. Therefore, up to now, the bibliographic collection of the UCA brings all those funds together reaching to more than ten thousand volumes among which thirty works have been chosen that chronologically stroll from the late XVII</span>^{<span style="color: black;">th</span>}<span style="color: black;"> to the mid XX</span>^{<span style="color: black;">th</span>}<span style="color: black;"> centuries.</span></span><br /> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span></div> <div align="left" style="text-align: center;"> <span style="color: black;"></span></div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;">But these publications do not only vary in the different periods in which they were published, but also, as expected, in their thematic: botany, zoology, surgery, handicrafts, history, physics, literature, religion or art. Each chapter corresponds with one of the chosen bibliographical works, reproducing, in the first place, the cover. Right after, the transcription of the title, the description of the volume, as well as a brief explanatory text about the author and the work, to finally conclude with the origin within the old funds of the Historical Library of the UCA.</span></span><br /> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span></div> <div align="left" style="text-align: center;"> <span style="color: black;"></span></div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;">Also must be highlighted the great variety of authors, as although one can think that the collection could be directed to local and regional themes and authors, the reality of itself is very different. The different centers that have increased the funds, as well as the academic and/or scientific personalities that have been nourishing them, have gathered through the decades the most varied collection of authors, where we should highlight to the foreigners represented, for instance, with the novelists Alejandro Dumas or Hans Cristian Andersen; to the nationals like the military Francisco Antonio de Ettenhard or the actor Juan Landa, but also the gaditans Emilio Castelar or Cayetano of the Toro.</span></span><br /> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span></div> <div align="left" style="text-align: center;"> <span style="color: black;"></span></div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;">In conclusion, a good selection that brings to the general public the magnificent humanistic treasure contained in the Historical Library of the UCA and that can also be purchased together with the volume, if preferred by the applicant, a wonderful collection of postcards in which part of the prints that form the interior of these precious works are reproduced. Therefore, we are in a position to affirm that the work has an unusual commercial interest without leaving aside its scientific and dissemination character since for those people who do not know these funds is an excellent showcase through which to get an idea of </span></span><span lang="EN-US" style="margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;"></span></span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "georgia" , "serif"; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black;">what they cover. Funds that according to the authors continue to grow thanks to donations from individuals who, with sound judgment, decide that their collections have to rest in this Historical Library, and that is also open for consultation even on the website of the aforementioned center (<a href="http://archivo.uca.es/">http://archivo.uca.es/</a>) as many of them are being digitized.</span></span></div> <div align="left" style="text-align: center;"> <span style="color: black;"></span></div> <div style="line-height: 150%; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div align="left" style="text-align: center;"> <span style="color: black;"></span></div>
