<span style="font-family: "georgia";">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia";">

<span style="font-family: "georgia";">

<span style="font-family: "georgia";">

<span style="font-family: "georgia";">

<span style="font-family: "georgia";">

<span style="font-family: "georgia";">***********
<span style="font-family: "georgia";">

<span style="font-family: "georgia";">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "georgia" , serif;">Epigraphic fonts are one of the most reliable and explicit existing archeological testimonies in order to know the reality of the inhabitants of a population. However, it should be noted that the study of the inscriptions usually tends to focus mainly on what has been written about them over time. For this reason, the knowledge of catalogs has been a very valuable resource for this research. They have updated the studies performed so far, expanding and shaping them as well as providing sense to an enormous amount of information.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">The work is structured in a large central part where we can find the epigraphic catalog, in which there have been contextualized the pieces in time and place of origin through 17 sections. In them, they are analyzed from the first pre-Roman inscriptions written in an alphabet prior to Latin, to those appearing in the modern age.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">Entering the first section, this is formed by four pre-Roman inscriptions, written before the Latin alphabet. In it, it has to be emphasized the study of two pieces, that have been considered fakes. The second section is dedicated to <span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">“Turris Lascutana”<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">, the first Latin inscription of Hispania. This document is essential for the epigraphy, linked to the history of Jerez by the closeness of its discovery and content, dated from 189/190 B.C., which is a legal document where it is requested the liberation of the inhabitants of Asta Regia. From this colony, likely existing from the time of Cesar, 19 funerary inscriptions are studied in the third section. From this Asta of Mesas site, Asta Regia, is the largest number of epigraphs discovered in the Jerez de la Frontera region. This settlement has been widely studied by historians since the Renaissance, and we have evidence of its importance since classical sources such as Strabo. Precisely, the text dedicated to this population, produces great amount of information due to the amount of inscriptions in the zone. The authors speak about a larger quantity of Gaditans in it, not Turdetani as believed, as well as that it was a site rich in wine and oil, with great production of ceramics and glass, with a very prosperous commercial work.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">Regarding the roman inscriptions within the city center of Jerez, even though it is not known the exact location where the population was framed, the researchers agree that there must have been some sort of specific city center given the vestiges found. From it, three pieces are studied related to religious epigraphy, thirteen funerary inscriptions and epitaphs, as well as three pieces with municipality related topic.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">Some other sites with special interest where those of Gibalbín, the one from La Fantasía dehesa and from the Bolaños. From Gibalbín we have received a municipal inscription, two military diplomas, six honorary and funerary inscriptions dedicated to emperors, and a Legal bronze. From La Fantasía dehesa there have been found two honorary inscriptions dedicated to emperors, and a piece of votive epigraphy. From Bolaños, four honorary and funerary inscriptions are studied. In the eighth section of the book we are going to found 17 minor sites, where it has been localized roman epigraphy as well. In addition of studying what specifically has appeared in the region of Jerez, in the ninth section the inscriptions related to it are studied, such as the one that tells us about a ceretani in Lusitania, or the inscription that appeared in Arcos de la Frontera.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">The next topics of this exceptional catalog are intended to revise the Late Roman and Visigothic inscriptions, as well as a gaditan inscription assigned to Jerez, together with the study of those inscriptions and documents relating to the old bishopric from Medina Sidonia. The last part is dedicated to two possible falsifications of the Modern Age, and to eighteen pieces related to the industrial and commercial activity, mainly ceramics.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">A second body of the work is made up of two annexes, in which maps, photographs and locations of the sites have been included, from which the inscriptions have been found.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">Ruiz Castellanos, Vega Geán and García Romero, have performed more than just a typical catalog.
