Helios González de la Flor, Graduate in History, is the author of the work 'Los Voluntarios de Cádiz: 1808-1814' (Cadiz’s Volunteers: 1808-1814), edited by the Publications Service of the University of Cádiz.
The book tries to know the motivations that led to the emergence of armed Gaditan volunteer groups during the conflict with the Napoleonic France in 1808 and until 1814.
The work begins with a historical justification in which the author unfolds the works related to the period and the reasons that lead him to study the volunteers. Subsequently follows a phase of the issue in which the author illustrates about already existing publications and researches.
The volunteers were people without military training, but overcame by their eager to defend their land and neighbors against the invading army. This is how the Cádiz volunteers fought in 1808 to defend the city from the siege of Napoleon Bonaparte. It should be noted that this story has been much skewed, with little data and lots of legend, so the researcher, through a detailed analysis, reaches the reader the influence, power and importance of the voluntary militias of Cádiz in the context of the Independence War.
The volume has four main chapters. The first one; “Cádiz at War: from the anti-French reaction to the defensive policy of The Square”. It is a chapter of introductory character that sets us in antecedents. We observe the time frame and the creation of volunteering groups against the French troops. We also assist, related to the aforementioned terms, to the creation of a Board that will bring together members of the Gaditan society in order to put into practice the defensive emergencies. The assassination of General Solano, the Observation and Defense Board, and the capture of the Rosily fleet, are some of other issues are treated in this block. The author also reveals the importance of guerrilla warfare and the war of sites as major war elements. This is why the weakness of the Spanish armies deployed in the battlefield was generally patent with exceptions like Bailén’s deed.
The second chapter is entitled as “General Framework: the voluntary forces of Cadiz”. The author analyzes how the creation of new municipal organizational structures is gestated, some of them reinforced such as Neighborhood Police Stations and others founded like the Observation and Defense Board.
The third chapter is the one giving title to the book, thus dealing exclusively with the Distinguished Volunteers of Cádiz. In this chapter the researcher addresses the problem of ordinances as an organizational method and the duty for the military and commercial needs of the Gaditan commercial group. It is curious as well the financing case, desiring the organization to act as an autonomous entity and not wanting to use the national vaults for the use of clothing and salary payments.
The author ends with a final chapter in which he tells us about other group of Gaditan volunteers. On the one hand the Urban Militia stands out due to that previous military history, then we have the Galician Provincial Artillerymen that represented the popular layers, often integrated into the most manual and sacrificial trades of the commercial Cádiz, and to finish the Regular Brigades of Honor that did not end settling in the Cádiz of Cortes.
Undoubtedly, this is a work that should be a reference for future studies regarding the Volunteers, a topic that, despite being known, lacked an investigation of this magnitude.

*************
Careful and laborious publication presented, on the occasion of the 35
th
anniversary of the Publications Service of the University of Cádiz, by the Editorial UCA imprint. Doctors Rosario Gestido, Ana Remón and José Joaquín Rodríguez have built this book of books -as self-described in its introduction-, in which we can enjoy a chosen selection of the bibliographic funds of our university.
Even though the University of Cádiz was founded in 1979, centuries ago, many works had begun to be grouped in different study centers of the gaditan capital: the Royal Surgery College, the Normal Teachers' Schools, the Elemental School of Commerce, the School of Pilots and the School of Industrial and Nautical Experts. Therefore, up to now, the bibliographic collection of the UCA brings all those funds together reaching to more than ten thousand volumes among which thirty works have been chosen that chronologically stroll from the late XVII
th
to the mid XX
th
centuries.
But these publications do not only vary in the different periods in which they were published, but also, as expected, in their thematic: botany, zoology, surgery, handicrafts, history, physics, literature, religion or art. Each chapter corresponds with one of the chosen bibliographical works, reproducing, in the first place, the cover. Right after, the transcription of the title, the description of the volume, as well as a brief explanatory text about the author and the work, to finally conclude with the origin within the old funds of the Historical Library of the UCA.
Also must be highlighted the great variety of authors, as although one can think that the collection could be directed to local and regional themes and authors, the reality of itself is very different. The different centers that have increased the funds, as well as the academic and/or scientific personalities that have been nourishing them, have gathered through the decades the most varied collection of authors, where we should highlight to the foreigners represented, for instance, with the novelists Alejandro Dumas or Hans Cristian Andersen; to the nationals like the military Francisco Antonio de Ettenhard or the actor Juan Landa, but also the gaditans Emilio Castelar or Cayetano of the Toro.
In conclusion, a good selection that brings to the general public the magnificent humanistic treasure contained in the Historical Library of the UCA and that can also be purchased together with the volume, if preferred by the applicant, a wonderful collection of postcards in which part of the prints that form the interior of these precious works are reproduced. Therefore, we are in a position to affirm that the work has an unusual commercial interest without leaving aside its scientific and dissemination character since for those people who do not know these funds is an excellent showcase through which to get an idea of
what they cover. Funds that according to the authors continue to grow thanks to donations from individuals who, with sound judgment, decide that their collections have to rest in this Historical Library, and that is also open for consultation even on the website of the aforementioned center (
http://archivo.uca.es/
) as many of them are being digitized.
