<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">* * *

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The book Representaciones Culturales de la Naturaleza Alter-Humana: aproximaciones desde la ecocrítica y los estudios filosóficos y sociales (Cultural Representations of the Alter-Human Nature: approaches from the ecocritic and the philosophical and social studies) supposes a choral work in which more than twenty professors from diverse Universities and National and International research centers have taken part.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The work is coordinated by Margarita Carretero González and José Marchena Domínguez. Margarita Carretero, PhD with Distinction in English Philology. She is a Full Professor of English Literature in the Department of English and German Philology at the University of Granada. José Marchena, PhD in Contemporary History, is General Manager of Cultural Extension and the Publications Service of the University of Cádiz.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The book is structured in six blocks. The first one supposes the methodological start, dealing with the analysis and the alter-human investigation. In this sense, José Tomás García contextualizes the ecocritical social research line. The human is in pursuit of an inclusive society, reconciling with the living, where harmonizes with animals, but also with cultures, nations and religions.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A second block includes speciesism and kiriarchy in the representation of some animal species. In this sense, we have the work of Lucía Orsanic, that studies the figure of the dog and its vision within the Middle Ages. Orsanic considers animal studies and ecocritics as the central lines of the methodological framework with which she performs the study of medieval canine images. Montserrat López Mújica treats the cat through the figure of Colette, a great animal defender who never considered them inferior beings. Francisco Javier Macías studies the wolf, in order to demystify it as an old enemy, through contemporary literary representations by authors like Kipling or Jack London. Arturo Morgado García studies whales. Like the wolf’s chapter, Morgado begins with the vision of the monstrous image during modernity, to give way to a more naturalistic image during the Age of Enlightenment. It will be Jules Verne and his Nemo where we will find the first reflections about its kindness.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In the third block the cosmogony, symbolism and economy in the alter-human nature are analyzed. In this way Yolotl González, Ana Verdú and Teresa Shiki treat the cosmogonic concept in their works. Gonzalez's transfer us to Mesoamerica, to the pre-Columbian era. In that work, the author focuses on the conception and symbolism the Mesoamerican peoples had regarding the animals, considering that, before the arrival of the Spaniards, domestic animals were only the dog and the turkey. Thus the animal world that surrounded them impregnated all their worldview. The study of Verdú and Shiki takes us to the Shuar-Jibaros community to study the relationship between the human and the alter-human in the animistic worldview of that community. From the worldview we move towards to symbology. María del Rosario García Huerta treats animals as icons of symbolic thought in prehistory. José Julio García Arranz does the same in the Modern Age. This block concludes with two articles that focus on the nutritional use of animals. Francisco Ruiz Gómez studies animals and human food in the Middle Ages, as food implies one of its relationships with the alter-human environment. Lola Carmen Morales researches on poultry species. Species that were present in hunting and medical sources, since they were consumed to prevent gastronomic and zoological diseases.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The fourth block is composed of two chapters that deal with shows and amusements from the alter-human nature. Lydia de Tienda analyzes bullfighting and all the moral, economic and cultural debate it supposes. José Manuel Pedrosa takes us to the world of trained rats in the Spanish XIXth century, as a precedent to circus shows.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In the fifth block, an alter-human vision is made in different literary genres. Diana Villanueva, in her field of study, chooses two works, Ishmael and Juicio a los Humanos (Judgment to Humans). In both, animals are essential for the salvation of the planet and humans recognize their superiority. José Marchena analyzes the values of respect and protection of the alter-human nature through reading books as a learning and inculcation tool for children. Moving forward with literary genres, the works of Terry Gifford and Lorraine Kerslake deal about British literature within the second half of the XIXth century. In this way, Gifford talks about "natureculture", leaving evidence that human culture is found in nature, highlighting as well the “mountain literature”. Kerslake turns to the animal fables of Ted Hughes to analyze, through the ecocritic, the therapeutic power of his narrations about animal stories, exploring the fable as a genre. Serenella Iovino and Margarita Carretero are the last works of this block. Both authors resort to fictional narrative. Iovino analyzes the work of Anna María Ortese to study ecofeminism and the politics of alterity. Margarita Carretero uses Frankenstein from the writer Mary Shelley to analyze, from a post-humanist discourse, the protagonist's refusal to consider alter-human nature as an ethical subject.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The sixth and last block is made up of two works that make use of the so-called ecomedia studies. In this way, Marcos José Gálvez analyzes through music the conflict between nature and human from Iron Maiden’s song, Stranger in a Strange Land. Pedro López de la Osa, on his part, uses the film The Hateful Eight to talk us about nature as another integrating part of the film.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In conclusion, the different works that form this volume, propose, from several areas of knowledge such as literature, history, sociology, art and philosophy, the recognition of the human and the “alter-human” as part of a harmonious whole integrated within common environment.
