************
Hipólito Sancho Mayi Díez de Aux-Sopranis, the
historian from El Puerto de Santa María (1893-1964), and an unpublished
manuscript of himself, regarding the Consolation Virgin of Jerez, constitute
the last published work within the collection of Fuentes para la Historia de Cádiz y su provincia (Sources for the History
of Cadiz and its province) of the Editorial UCA imprint.
Hipólito Sancho de Sopranis, name with which the
author is mainly known, studied Theology before graduating in Law, Philosophy
and History. It would be to this last discipline the one to which he would
dedicate most of his works, constituting, therefore, his true vocation. From a
very early age, Hipólito Sancho will understand research as a method to get to
the truth, trying throughout his whole life, to apply his knowledge rigorously and
with independence. Being a man of deep religiosity, this does not impede him to
understand that the truth must prevail in every investigation, something that
we will see with the manuscript at hand. The historian, who covers in his long
research career a multitude of themes and eras, focuses most of his work on the
knowledge of the cities of Jerez de la Frontera and El Puerto de Santa María
through an exhaustive knowledge of their files.
Hipólito Sancho will have an intense academic
activity, being member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences and Arts of
Cadiz, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Seville and the Center of Studies from
Jerez, in which he actively collaborates for its foundation. At the same time,
he would combine his work as teacher in various center of his hometown, working
in the archives and library of El Puerto de Santa María, as well as with the general
secretariat of the Mayor's Office in 1939. Though, paradoxically, he would
never hold a stable employment.
The manuscript regarding the publication, is a text
that appears in the Convent of Santo Domingo de Jerez, with no authorship or
title, of unknown existence for the Dominicans themselves before the moment of
its appearance, as a result of them taking charge of the archive. With a
prologue by Manuel Ravina Martín, this edition is made by the Doctor in History
Antonio Aguayo Cobo and Jesús Antonio Serrano Plazuelo, Bachelor in Humanities,
both responsible for the introductory study to the found text.
The performed research on the manuscript, has taken
into account different elements, both stylistic and material, making clear, in
the first place, the hand of Hipólito Sancho.
Historians agree on the idea that the text is a
possible draft, prior to 1959, destined to the Dominicans for a later
publication that was left unseen for unknown reasons. The work is composed of
ten chapters without cover, tittle page, bibliography, or appendices, a total
of 119 typed quartos, with barely written annotations. This text tells us from
the origins of the cult up to the devotion and peculiarities of itself, going
through an exhaustive iconographic analysis, as well as the different
historical evolutions that the image has endured.
Analyzing the work, the investigators observe how
Hipólito Sancho's eagerness is, above all, to bring truthfulness to the study
of the image, as for instance with regards to the chronology of its miraculous
discovery by the Adorno family in the Gulf of Roses, in 1285, discarded date due
to diverse elements of the text. So, in the aforementioned legend, historical
personages born in later centuries appear, which induces to think the invention
of the legend from this family, to the self-aggrandizement of the surname.
Hipólito Sancho shows an effort for preciseness, even
in what regards to some miracles attributed to the Consolation Virgin, in spite
of his faith to her, based mainly on documentary evidences, as well as in all
the data regarding the cult in Jerez de la Frontera throughout centuries.
This monograph concerns a work of exceptional interest
to recover the importance of Hipólito Sancho as historian. Aguayo Cobo and
Serrano Plazuelo, elaborate a thorough study of the unpublished text that
allows us to identify a meticulous investigator, who wants to know the reality
of the facts beyond the tradition or his own religiosity. An indispensable work
both for his extensive contribution to the history of the image, and to fairly value
the fundamental figure of Hipólito Sancho.
