Hipólito Sancho de Sopranis was a historian born in El Puerto de Santa María.
With a solid humanistic background, he graduated in Law and Philosophy, and afterwards in History, which would be his true vocation, in the universities of Deusto and Salamanca. This subject and Art would be the main axes of his research facet. In spite of his deep religiosity, he was in favor of rejecting traditions, however pious and old they were, and returns to the document as the unique working tool. His studies will focus on the history of his birth Puerto de Santa María, to which Jerez and Cádiz would soon be added, with their rich and respective archives.
After his death several unpublished works have been published, such as
Mariología Medieval Xericiense
,
Historia de Jerez de la Frontera
,
and others have been reissued, such as
Historia del Puerto de Santa María
or
La Virgen de la Consolación
.
The work that we discover today, a new updated and revised edition, is divided into four different books that make a deep historical and social journey along the time chosen for the study.
The first of these books, titled as
Los Origenes
(The Origins), is composed of the first ten chapters of the work. In them, we can make a journey from the first conquests of King San Fernando in Low Andalucía, to the advance of Alfonso X for those same territories, as well as the incorporation of Low Andalucía to the Alcanate of Christian domains. Also, and demonstrating the fervent religious character of the author, he will focus at this point in the sanctuary of El Puerto de Santa María, as well as in the popularity and the miracles that emanated from it. Of course, the references to the stays in El Puerto de Santa María of personalities such as Cristóbal Colón or Juan de la Cosa will not be overlooked. To end with an extensive study of the organization of the town, its population, and its religiosity throughout the Middle Ages.
In the second of these books, titled as
La Villa Marítima y Mercantil
(The Maritime and Mercantile Town), an extensive journey through eight chapters will be performed, entering to analyze the events that helped to start the relationship of El Puerto de Santa María with Africa and America. As well as the mercantile movement that occurred in the city during the year 1500, and that would serve merchants of all nationalities to be installed in the ria
, as well as to increase the export of wine and salt. Something that would undoubtedly help the ennoblement of the town of El Puerto, as well as to the elevation of the tone and quality of life, and the appearance of new constructions and the settlement of families of grandiose ancestry. Finalizing the analysis of this historical moment with the exhibition of the religious life of the city, as well as the different foundations of convents, such as the
San Agustín
or
Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación
.
The third book, composed of nine chapters, entitled as
La Época de Esplendor
(The Age of Splendor), will take us from the stay in the city of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, and the dukes of Medinaceli, until the transformation of El Puerto de Santa María with the appearance of the numerous houses of shippers that were diffusing throughout the territory of the town. Passing also by the creation of the patronage of the chapel of
Nuestra Señora de los Milagros
, the foundation of the convent of preachers or the War of Spanish Succession and the effect it had on El Puerto, and the subsequent looting of the city by the allied troops of Archduke Charles.
The last book, entitled
El Iluminismo
(The Enlighment), composed of the last eight chapters of the study, will analyze what were the causes and reasons for the incorporation of el Puerto de Santa María to the Crown of Philip V of Spain, as well as the stay of this monarch in the city . Event that would lead to the founding of the Schools of
La Compañia
, the development and expansion of the studies of the brotherhood of
Nuestra Señora de la Aurora
, the opening to the public of the conventual studies. To end again with the study of the religious life of the town in this last era, as well as the artistic movement, which would create a new industry in El Puerto, based on rockery and Neoclassicism.
In addition, the renewed work has an appendix where you can consult all the magistracies of El Puerto de Santa María until the extinction of the township, as well as the biography utilized for its realization, and two broad indexes, onomastic and toponymical, to understand better the presented work. To highlight, finally the initial book of poems, which serves to make a tour of the work that is presented sixty years after the original, and that sign Manuel González Jiménez and Juan José Iglesias Rodríguez.
In conclusion, this is a capital work for the understanding of the historiography of El Puerto. A work that illustrates the origins of El Puerto de Santa María from a wide range of information that is structured in different chapters, necessary to analyze in detail all the milestones that have marked the history of the city between the XII
th
and XIX
th
centuries.

is a collective study that aims to shed light on a process that is transforming the Carnival of Cádiz: the cultural industrialization of coplas
. A reality that is allowing authors and groups to compete with their own processes of creation, production and marketing, in a cultural market dominated by digital consumption.
In this collective work coordinated by Ignacio Sacaluga, Doctor of Communication from the European University of Madrid and MBA in Business Management from IBEDE
Business School, and currently Director of the Communication Department of the Communication Faculty of the European University of Madrid, and Álvaro Pérez, Doctor of Pedagogy from the University of Granada, currently full professor at the Sagrada Familia University Center, appointed to the University of Jaén, get together the works of a group of researchers who have a common goal: to promote the academic foundation of the Carnival of Cádiz from various fields of study.
In this regard, the historian Felipe Barbosa alludes in his chapter, dedicated to the Carnival of Cádiz as a cultural heritage with five centuries of antiquity that fights for the freedom of expression, to the origin of the dimension that has reached with the passing of time the Carnival of Cádiz throughout the XIX
th
century. A period in which the songs that were sung in the city served as a transmission belt for a party that was yearly renewed in music, lyrics and names.
Doctor Santiago Moreno offers in his chapter, dedicated to the successes and defeats of the Carnival, a historical look of the party, focusing his work at the time of the
Dictablanda
and the II
nd
Republic. He will point in this way to the history of the
Conjunto Hércules
and the
Dantón
o
Los Libertadores Franceses
choir, seeing in this point how the story tries to explain the interest that the different social sectors in the Carnival, as well as in the mass communication media of the first third of the last century.
Doctor Maria Luisa Páramo Fernández-Llamazares highlights in her chapter the literary and scenic component of the Carnival of Cádiz, defending its value as a manifestation of popular culture that takes place in the context of a local fiesta.
Doctor Ignacio Sacaluga Rodríguez explores in his work, dedicated to the coplas and the social communication of the Carnival, in the communicational repercussion of this sociocultural phenomenon. In this chapter we can see how the coplas can have an own message character in relation to the basic theory of telecommunications in a communicative process, where the mass audience is not only delimited in the seats of a theater and of an official contest, but to the totality under the use of social networks.
For his part, Doctor Francisco García Gallardo addresses the musical richness that the coplas of Cádiz flaunt, as well as the global flow of culture that emanates from them, reaching with his study to address the sociopolitical, cultural and geographical context, where music and fiesta have been submitting, and adapting, to different hybridization and miscegenation processes.
To conclude we have the chapter of Doctor Álvaro Pérez García, where the Carnival of Cádiz is shown as an example of educational and educational project. He insists on the idea of taking the Carnival from the street to the classroom, in order to take advantage of the didactic and creative potential that emanates from the Carnival party, as well as the great educational resources that the festival presents.
This book, therefore, is consequence of a greater interest in the research effort to complete the fingerprint of the Carnival of Cádiz from very different point of views: its literary and scenic dimension, the musical, the communication or the pedagogy, without forgetting the legitimate commercial vision that, faced with an increase in the demand for Carnival contents, it is preparing for a golden age.

Manuel Bustos Rodríguez is Professor of Modern History at the University of Cádiz, Director of the Royal Hispanic American Academy and honorary member

He was intern of the Confederation of Savings Banks, the Fundaçâo Calouste Gulbenkian and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, as well as visiting professor in several European universities (Louvain, Bordeaux, Paris-Sorbonne and Hamburg) and in the National University of San Juan in Argentina. He is currently member of the scientific committee of
Revista Hispanoamericana
,
and
Revue Histoire, Économie et Societé
. His research has revolved around Maritime History, Cádiz in the modern period and thought in the Age of Enlightenment. He is the author of numerous articles in specialized journals, and fourteen books as sole author.
The book that presents us on this occasion can be divided into five important points, which takes us from the background of the consulate of shippers to India in the XVI
th
and XVII
th
centuries, until the XVIII
th
century, culminating moment since its transfer to Cádiz, as well as the period that comprehends the crisis of the Old Regime, analyzing how these changes affected the city in general, and the Indian consulate in particular. It will also include several annexes in which to consult the name of the priors and consuls living in Cádiz, as well as the municipal offices elected in the municipality of Cádiz during the study period. In this section, it will appear as well the recreation of an important family tree, belonging to the Landáburu
family: key lineage for the good work of the consulate of shippers to the Indies, and the municipal council, in the years belonging the study.
The consulate of shippers to the Indies, founded in 1543 in Seville, and which in 1717 would move its headquarters to the city of Cádiz, is undoubtedly one of the institutions with longer life within the Old Regime, since by joining the
Casa de Contratación
it would be able to prolong its existence until the year 1868.
Although the study reflected in the book will focus on the gaditan period of the institution, especially in the part corresponding to the second half of the XVIII
th
century, to which the author will devote an extensive chapter in which he will discuss both the political-ideological framework, as of the merchants, or how the consulate had to face the free trade and the tax reform, there will also be a place in the research to talk about the antecedent of the consulate of shippers to the Indies, to know how was its financing before being transferred to Cádiz, what were its main functions, and even to know what was the valuation that the society had on the shipper office. There will also be a place to narrate the problems and vicissitudes that occurred for the transfer from Seville to Cádiz, as well as the reactions that occurred with the change of city.
A fundamental point will be to know how the consulate of shippers to the Indies defended itself against the crisis of the Old Regime, period in which the institution and the commerce of Cádiz were losing strength, until falling completely into a prolonged decline. This freefall was tried to be stopped with the mirage of the creation of an open port, something that would not be achieved until 1829, certainly too late to save the consulate, or at least to keep it as one of the brightest institutions within the kingdom. The war of Independence against the army of Napoleon, the first constitutionalist Courts and the imminent independence of the American territories, plunged the city of Cádiz in depths from which it would take a long time to recover, remaining, once recovered, far from being the bright and bombastic city that was when the consulate of shippers to the Indies was transferred from Seville.
We are before a book written with exquisite rigor, and with a wide knowledge of the documentary sources of the time. It is a necessary work to understand the sometimes complex mercantile life of Cadiz, as well as to understand the change, or rather the adaptation, of a city like Cádiz to the different periods that it lived between the XVIII
th
and XIX
th
centuries.

O monge do Bussaco
A filha do
Polaco
y

(The noble example of Spain: Portuguese Poetry of the Independence War (1808-1814). Critical study and annotated bilingual corpus), co-authored with professor Gabriela Gândara Terenas (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa), published in 2015 in Madrid, and edited by the Ministry of Defense.
In the case of
La memoria vivida y la memoria
contada (The lived memory and the related memory), the author offers us three broad chapters, as well as two tables where we can observe all the bibliographical sources, Portuguese as well as European, cited in the historical novels used in the publication. In them, in addition to the names of the authors and the title of the work, we can see to which topic each refers: political history, diplomatic, military, naval, local, ecclesiastical, chronicles, memoirs, biographies, hagiographies, heraldry, dictionaries, press or legislative texts, among others. To which we must add an extensive section of sources and bibliography.
This book aims to publicize a little known literary heritage within the current historical novel: the ensemble formed by the stories of the Portuguese civil war (1832-1834), as well as to inscribe the works in which this war is referenced within the historical process in which these novels are situated, as well as within the literary genre to which they belong. Thus, in the first chapter, dedicated to the evolution of the Portuguese historical novel of the XIX
th
century, we will make a journey that will take us from the medieval era to the current time of the genre. Starting from the analysis of a national identity and a national historical novel, since the characteristics of both are in between in the treated subject, seeking to mark in this way the integration chronological limits given the important bond that exists in Portugal between Liberalism and Romanticism. Something that will bring rupture to the classical canon, exhausting medievalism and creating two different narrative expansions: the first one making reference to Iberian federalism
and the overseas expansion historical novel, and after the crisis of the aforementioned, a second expansion dedicated to the current historical trend. Finally, we will see how from the degradation of these new narrative genres we arrive to the current concept of historical novel in Europe, something that will arise with the appearance in the panorama of Leo Tolstoy
, and his historical novel of Russian news
, in particular
War and Peace
. This change will affect all Europe’s narrative, and of course also to Spain and France, which will change their traditional historical novel to a more present one by the hand of Benito Pérez Galdós, Honoré de Balzac or Alexandre Chatrian, among others. This change will affect more countless countries, such as Italy, Poland, the Austrian Empire, the Kingdom of Hungary, and the majority of Slavic influence countries.
The second chapter will focus on the new concept of Portuguese historical novel, which has a later appearance compared to what happens in Spain, with which it shares a chronological framework. In this way, we will find as starting point of this narrative style the Portuguese Civil War (1832-1834), and the work
O arco de sanct'Anna
by the novelist of Almeida Garret in 1845. In spite of everything, in Portugal the current historical novel will be developed more under the political protection of the Liberal State, as its origin is more related with the phenomenon of the War of Independence against the French, than of the establishment of liberalism in the Iberian Peninsula. On the other hand, at this point the political and pedagogical commitment of the new novelists will be discussed, as well as the political-social function shown by the new current historical novel, focusing on the key point of creation: the emotional pain of the history. This is because the writers of the new novel part from the idea of
a generalized ignorance among the young Portuguese population of what happened decades ago, product not only of the elapsed time, but the extreme illiteracy of the time. These historical events on which will fall in particular the need to overcome this collective emotional pain will be the Peninsular War and the civil wars of the 30s and 40s. She will finish the main chapter talking about one of the most unknown novelists, but the one that more effort put in the prolific dissemination of Portuguese history: Francisco Pedro Celestino Soares, and his masterpiece on Portuguese historical divulgation:
Luiza e Julia.
, born during the summer of 1844 after the failed military uprising of Torres Novas against the conservative government of Costa Cabral.
The last part will focus on the popular discussion of history, using as a reflection the appeared works during the three French invasions of Portugal and the Peninsular War. The first French invasion will appear reflected in the works
Os guerrilheiros da norte
, by Manuel Pinheiro Chagas, and
Amor da Pátria
by Francisco Gomes de Amorin, highlighting among them the work of Guilherme Real Cabral entitled
Ângela Santa Clara
. This will be the only one with a local motivation, and that is not born as a response to the pedagogical diffusion of liberalism. The second French invasion will be represented in several works, highlighting
O sargento-mor Vilar
, by Arnaldo Gama: in it, the author presents all the documentation he was able to gather on the subject, referenced in notes at the end of the novel. In the works regarding the third French invasion again the contribution of Manuel Pinheira Chagas,
O monge do Bussaco
, appeared in the form of a serial saga, leaving well represented what arose in the Peninsular Ward in
A filha do Polaco
and
Os últimos amores de Napoleão
, of Antonio de Campos Júnior, retired soldier, who approached the complex historical period employing multiple texts whose treatment reported the elaboration of a historical-scientific text.
We are therefore facing a magnificent work in terms of the treatment offered over a historical period, and therefore literary, crucial for Portugal and all countries chronologically similar like Spain, Italy or France, and that may be quite forgotten in terms of general studies. The author performs, consciously and in an organized way, a great divulgation job about the memory lived and related by Portuguese writers of the XIX
th
century.

Ana Remón Rodríguez is doctor in History of Science from the University of Cádiz and specialist in Archives, Libraries and Museums. Since 1982 she has worked as Library Technician, first at the Public Library of the State and, since 1985, at the UCA Library, where she has developed her professional career within the Health Sciences Library. Currently, she is head of the Collection and Heritage Section. She has performed an extensive teaching work through training courses for library users. Regarding her research activity, her publications are mainly focused on studies in old funds and users phonation.
The work she presents us can be divided into seven broad chapters, concluded by a series of tables and explanatory figures, as well as by an extensive dossier of documentary sources and catalogs consulted for the completion of the exhaustive research work.
The first chapter makes an extensive tour of the historical context surrounding the creation of the College of Surgery of Cádiz, passing through points that encompass both society and politics, as well as science and culture. Showing us how the opening of the country to Europe provided a more open society, with a conception of man and church and religion closest to the idea of the Age of
Enlightenment, which would be of vital importance for the birth of the flourishing Cádiz that will promote the appearance the Royal College of Surgery.
Throughout the second chapter, the author will focus more her view about the Spanish and European medicine, and on how each one behaved in the important transition between the period of the Age of Enlightenment and the Romanticism. Also, she will emphasize in the medical-surgical training that Spain had from the Late Middle Ages to the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth II. Showing the evolution from a pluralistic teaching up to the moment when there was a collapse of the cultivation of science with the return of XIX
th
century absolutism, passing through periods of tradition and modernity where the University had much to say, both for better or worse.
The third chapter makes direct reference to the Royal College of Surgery, and tells how it evolved to become the Faculty of Medical Sciences. We will know from its background up to its decline. Also how the creation of the Royal Hospital was, how Pedro Vigili will transformed it into a military character center that will host the Royal College of Surgery of the Navy, and how changed from having a three year formation to six, where the study method mixed both theoretical and practical knowledge. Likewise, the author will narrate how the facilities were, their rules, and the necessary precepts to achieve the title of Latin surgeon of the Royal institution, which took into account both knowledge and behavior.
The fourth chapter refers to how the Spanish Libraries in the transition from the Age of Enlightenment to Romanticism were, to move on then, in the fifth one, to focus on the functioning and services offered by the Library of the Royal College of Surgery. She will pass, in this way, to narrate how the readings and the libraries were, and in general their role within the country, to do then the same exercise, but in a particular way, with Cádiz, entering now, to evaluate in detail the legal framework that encompassed it, carefully analyzing each Statute and General Ordinance that refers to the Library of the Royal College of Surgery of Cádiz. Finishing the chapter with the economic analysis of the institution, which refers above all to the method of acquisition and incorporation of the different works that formed its fund.
After making a citation, and a brief review of all the librarians who passed through the School, the work changes field, and accomplishes throughout the sixth chapter the critical study of the Library's funds. Begins with an analysis by author, to later move to individualize by date, place and language of publication and edition. It is striking within this point bibliographical classification system of Charles Brunet, which was the system chosen by the School and that was developed at the beginning of the XIX
th
century. In it, you can see topics such as Literature and Medical Philosophy, Anatomy, Hygiene, Physiology, Surgery, Pharmacy, Mathematics, Pathology or Therapeutics, among others.
To conclude, the author refers to the pillage that Bartolomé José Gallardo made to the fund of the Royal College of Surgery of Cádiz to perform the creation of the Library of the Cortes. We will see at this point, how with the transfer of the funds from the Royal College to the new Library of the Cortes, ordered by its director Gallardo, would begin what would be the long plundering and loss of such important documentary and bibliographic funds, even if it was not its only cause. Gallardo will move that library as the deputies to Cortes had difficulties documenting their interventions, but he also does it with the intention of creating a library of public instruction. Modification that would also affect the Library of Guardiamarinas, and the Maritime Library of Cádiz.
In short, the work achieves an interesting labour of approaching to the public not only of the bibliographic fund of the Library of the Royal College of Surgery of Cádiz and its use, but also lends its research to the formation of a perfect housing to understand the historical and social contexts which led the city to get to have one of the most important libraries of the time, within one of the flagship institutions of the contemporary history of Spain in general and of Cádiz in particular.
